Meeting Others
I am a shy person, and it is something that I will still have to work on after this hour alone. I had planned on going to the Market Square to negotiate prices for a souvenir for my sister. In Amsterdam, I just paid the price that they were asking for, even though I knew I could probably gotten a better deal. I was just too nervous. In my previous excursions, I didn't have as much interaction with other people, so that idea seemed perfect.
Some things went wrong, but I ended up talking with three different people, a woman from Maastricht, and two young American men. I was very nervous to strike up conversation with the woman. I knew that I wanted to ask about life in Maastricht, because I find the openness here so interesting. She was originally from Amsterdam, but moved here because of the small feel and openness. I am very glad that I came upon that opportunity. Starting conversation with a stranger can be intimidating because you never know what kind of reception you will get. The fear of denial and the unknown was something I tried to overcome. |
